Samantha Marks, who will join the University of North Carolina women's golf team in the fall, fired a two-under-par 70 in the final round to win the Deutsche Bank Partners for Charity Junior Shootout conducted by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).
Marks, from Maitland, Fla., carded 75-74 in the first two rounds. Her 3-over 219 total topped Kelly Whaley, who posted a 4-over 220, by one stroke. This year's 54-hole event was played at The Golf Club of Cape Cod in East Falmouth, Mass., which featured a par 72, 6,159-yard layout. Marks was the defending champion having also won the 2011 event with a 223 total at Plymouth Country Club in Plymouth, Mass. Earlier this month, Marks played in the U.S. Women's Open. In 2011, she carded five top-10 finishes and 10 top-25 finishes.
Four Tar Heel golfers, Casey Grice, Courtney Gunter, Catherine O'Donnell and Maia Schechter, will be playing in the 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship after qualifying earlier this summer. The prestigious event will be played August 6-12 at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
