Two Tar Heel Golfers Playing In U.S. WoMen's Open

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Katherine Perry, a rising junior on the University of North Carolina women's golf team, fired a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 38th place after the first round of the 67th U.S. Women's Open Championship. Another Tar Heel, Samantha Marks, who will be a freshman this fall, carded an 87 and is tied for 155th place. The 72-hole event is being played the par-72 Blackwolf Run Championship Course in Kohler, Wis.
Earlier this year, Perry tied for eighth place at last week's NCAA Championships while leading the Tar Heels to a 10th-place finish. An All-ACC selecton this year, Perry was named an honorable mention All-America by the National Golf Coaches Association. She carded five top-20 and six top-30 finishes this spring and another top-30 finish last fall. She finished the year with a 74.60 scoring average with five under-par rounds, two in the 60s, and one even par round.
As a junior player, Marks has five top-10 finishes and 10 top-25 finishes in 2011. She won the AJGA Deutsche Bank of Partners for Charity Junior Shoot Out. Marks' other top finishes in 2011 were a tie for runner-up honors at the East Coast Golfweek Invitational, a third-place finish at the AJGA Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier, a tie for fourth at the AJGA Under Armour/Vicky Hurst Championship and a tie for seventh at the Kathy Whitworth Invitational.
