Two Golfers Advance In U.S. WoMen's Amateur

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After two days of stroke play, Tar Heel golfers Casey Grice and Maia Schechter are among the 64 players to advance to match play at the 112th U.S. Women's Amateur which is being played at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
Grice, a rising junior from College Station, Texas, fired a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to finish at even par 144 in the stroke play portion of the prestigious event. She tied for 17th place after carding five birdies, one eagle and four bogeys on her way to a 3-under 69. Schechter, a rising sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., shot a 4-over 76 in the second round of stroke play to finish at 5-over 149 in a tie for 51st place. She carded one birdie, three bogeys and one double-bogey en route to her 4-over 76.
Two other Tar Heels, Courtney Gunter and Catherine O'Donnell, failed to advance to Wednesday's first round of match play. Gunter, a rising senior from Matthews, N.C., carded a 6-over 78 on Tuesday for a 157 total to tie for 114th place. O'Donnell, who was a senior this past year, withdrew from the second round due to a sore back after shooting an 85 in the first round.
Schechter is matched up against Alina Ching, a rising junior at Pepperdine, in the first round of match play at 10:30 Wednesday morning. Grice's match begins at noon when she will meet Lee Lopez, a rising senior at UCLA.
Match play concludes Sunday with a 36-hole championship final match. This marks the first time The Country Club in Cleveland has hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur.
