Women Golfers 11th At Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C.- The North Carolina women's golf team fired a 1-under-par 287 in the second round of the Cougar Classic and sits in 11th place with a 10-over 586 total. Sophomore Casey Grice led the Tar Heels on Monday shooting a 3-under 69.
"The team played much better today," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "We still have considerable ground to make up. But if they all play as well as they are capable, we can certainly move up the leaderboard for a successful tournament."
Grice, from College Station, Texas, fired three birdies en route to her 3-under 69. She is tied for 10th place with a 3-under 141 total. Freshman Elizabeth Mallett and sophomore Jackie Chang both have 3-over 147 totals and are tied for 42nd. Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, fired a 2-under 70 on Monday with four birdies and two bogeys while Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., carded an even par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. Katherine Perry, a sophomore from Cary, N.C., shot a 5-over 77 in the second round for an 8-over 152 total and is tied for 81st while Samantha Marks, a freshman from Maitland, Fla., posted a 4-over 76 for an 11-over 155 total and is tied for 101st.
Florida fired a 9-under 279 in the second round for an 11-under 565 total to grab the lead over the 24-team field. Southern California, the first-round leader, is three strokes back in second place at 8-under 568 after firing a 5-under 283 on Monday. Vanderbilt is alone in third place at 2-under 574 while Virginia and Auburn are tied for fourth place at even par 576. Duke and Georgia are tied for sixth place at 1-over 577 while NC State is eighth at 5-over 581, Alabama is ninth at 7-over 583, Tennessee is 10th at 8-over 584 and Carolina is 11th at 10-over 586.
Camilla Hedberg of Florida grabbed the individual lead by firing a 6-under 66 on Monday for a 9-under 135 total. Gator teammate Isabelle Lendl is two strokes back in second place at 7-under 137 after shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round. Duke's Lindy Duncan and Southern Cal's Sophia Popov are tied for third place at 5-under 139 while five players are deadlocked at 4-under 140 in a tie for fifth place - Vanderbilt's Irina Gabasa, Central Florida's Carolin Pinegger, Georgia's Manuela Carbajo Re, Auburn's Marta Sanz and Furman's Laura Wearn. Carolina's Grice and Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton are another stroke back in a tie for 10th place at 3-under 141.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Golf Club, a par 72 course with a 6,205-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
