Women Golfers Tie For Ninth At Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C.- The North Carolina women's golf team fired a 4-over-par 292 in the final round of the Cougar Classic and finished tied for ninth place with a 14-over 878 total. Sophomore Jackie Chang led the Tar Heels on Tuesday shooting a 3-under 69.
"The team had another good day," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "The wind was a factor, particularly towards the end of the round. I believe we did a lot of great things this week that we can build upon and be successful in our next tournament."
Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., tied for 14th place at even par 216. Chang's round of 69 included 6 birdies and three bogeys. Sophomore Casey Grice also tied for 14th with a 216 total. Grice, from College Station, Texas, carded a 3-over 75 in the final round. Elizabeth Mallett, a freshman from Sutton Coldfield, England, fired a 1-over 73 to finish at 4-over 220 in a tie for 36th place. Sophomore Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., posted a 3-over 75 to finish at 227 in a tie for 71st while Samantha Marks, a freshman from Maitland, Fla., carded a 4-over 76 and finished with a 231 total in a tie for 93rd.
Florida topped the field of 24 teams to capture the team championship. The Gators fired a 1-under-par 287 to finish with a 12-under 852 total, six strokes ahead of runner-up Duke, which finished at 858 after firing a 7-under 281 on Tuesday. Southern California finished in third place at 1-under 863 while Vanderbilt placed fourth at even par 864, Georgia finished fifth at 867, Auburn finished sixth at 870 and NC State finished seventh at 871. Rounding out the top 10 are Alabama in eighth place at 877 and Carolina and Tennessee tied for ninth at 878.
Camilla Hedberg of Florida captured the individual title with a 13-under-par 203 total. Hedberg fired a 4-under 68 in the final round. Lindy Duncan of Duke, who also shot 68 on Tuesday, was the runner up finishing four strokes back at 9-under 208. Tennessee's Erica Popson and Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton tied for third place at 5-under 211 while Florida's Isabelle Lendl finished alone in fifth place at 4-under 212. There was a four-way tie for sixth place at 3-under 213 between Vanderbilt's Kendall Martindale, Florida's Mia Piccio, Auburn's Marta Sanz and Penn State's Christina Vosters. Rounding out the top 10 are Georgia's Manuela Carbajo Re and Duke's Ashley Xiao who tied for 10th at 2-under 214.
The 54-hole event was played at Yeamans Hall Golf Club, a par 72 course with a 6,205-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action Sept. 21-23 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
