September 7, 2012 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team gets its fall campaign underway this Sunday through Tuesday at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. The 54-hole event will be played at Yeamans Hall, a par 72, 6,205-yard layout.
"We are looking forward to the Cougar Classic," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "It is probably our team's favorite tournament of the year. The event is played on one of the great old golf courses. The competition is going to be exceptionally strong this year with 24 teams competing from all over the country. It will be a very good test of where our team stands and what we will need to do to prepare for the rest of the season."
A strong junior class will lead the Tar Heels at the Cougar Classic - Casey Grice, Katherine Perry and Jackie Chang. Grice, from College Station, Texas, was an All-ACC performer last year along with being a Golfweek All-America honorable mention. She carded eight top-20 finishes last year including a tie for fifth-place finish at the ACC Championships. She posted top-10 finishes in the last two Cougar Classics, placing eighth last year and tying for second in 2010. Perry, from Cary, N.C., was also an All-ACC performer last year and an NGCA (National Golf Coaches Association) All-America honorable mention. She carded five top-30 finishes including a tie for eighth at the NCAA Championships. Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., carded six top-30 finishes last year. She has posted top-10 finishes in the Cougar Classic the last two years, tying for fifth place last year and tying for second in 2010. Two freshmen will make their debut for the Tar Heels - Elizabeth Mallett and Samantha Marks. Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, was the 2011 Nottinghamshire Girls Open Champion and the 2011 Warwickshire School Girls Champion. Marks, from Maitland, Fla., played in this year's U.S. Women's Open and won the 2011 AJGA Deutsche Bank of Partners for Charity Junior Shootout.
Rounding out the Tar Heel squad for 2012-13 are a pair of seniors, Courtney Gunter and Michelle Ahn, and sophomore Maia Schechter. Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., played in nine tournaments last year while Ahn, from Chapel Hill, N.C., played in one event. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., played in one tournament last year and also played in the 2012 U.S. Amateur, losing in the second round of match play.
After participating in the Cougar Classic, the Tar Heels will return to action September 21-23 when they play in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., and then the Fall Preview will take place October 5-7 in Athens, Ga. Carolina's fall campaign will conclude at home with the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational to be played October 12-14 at UNC Finley Golf Course.
