CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 13 UNC swept Virginia on the road Friday night, knocking off the Cavaliers 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-19) to improve to 17-1 overall and 6-1 in ACC play.
Kayla Berringer and Jovana Bjelica helped give the Tar Heels their second-straight sweep, as Berringer tallied 10 kills and a .625 attack, and Bjelica had 11 kills and two blocks, also hitting a solid .529.
"I'm pretty excited about how we played tonight," head coach Joe Sagula said. "We came out really focused for the first set in what I think was our best start to a match all year. We knew Virginia would battle, but we were able to establish control. Kayla was on fire tonight, and the team really defended well and attacked well and had great rhythm throughout the match."
"This was the best intensity I've seen from this team in several matches. We're excited for this road victory tonight as we look forward to playing at Virginia Tech tomorrow," Sagula said.
UNC came out strong in the first set, easily taking the frame 25-12. The Cavaliers pushed hard in set two though, forcing extra points as Carolina took a 26-24 victory. The Tar Heels wrapped up the sweep with a final 25-19 set three win as the team hit over .300 in each set with a final .370 team attack for the match.
Lauren Adkins tallied eight kills and three blocks, while Victoria McPherson finished with seven kills and three blocks, hitting .462, and Paige Neuenfeldt added four kills and four blocks for Carolina. UNC finished with eight total team blocks.
