Tar Heels Open Fall in Norfolk, Va.

The North Carolina varsity rowing team opened fall competition on Saturday, racing in eights and fours against Navy and host Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. UNC's varsity eight won the eights race, with the Tar Heel second varsity eight coming in sixth. In the fours, UNC took third, fourth, seventh and 10th in the 10-boat field.
The boats raced along a 4,500-meter course in perfect conditions on the Lafayette River. Eights went first, with fours following shortly afterward.
"We have had many productive practices this fall technically and have already gained fitness," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We feel that was reflected on the racecourse today. We thought this weekend was a great way to kick off the fall with some tough competition."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Occoquan Chase on Oct. 13 in Occoquan, Va.
