Tar Heels Open Spring At Tennessee
March 7, 2014 | Women's Rowing
The North Carolina rowing team competed for the first time in the spring season on Saturday, racing against Tennessee in a scrimmage at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The varsity fours kicked off the morning racing three 1000-meter pieces, then the varsity eights followed with three 2000-meter pieces. The novices followed with the same pattern but racing all in eights: three 1000-meter pieces then, after a break, three 2000-meter pieces.
Although the teams did not record times in the early season scrimmage, the Tar Heels performed well and headed back to Chapel Hill pleased with their overall showing.
"The varsity has worked incredibly hard this fall and winter because we all see the potential this team has for the spring," UNC head coach Sarah Haney said. "We had a great fall season and we know we are going to build off of that success for an even more successful spring.
"We were excited about racing Tennessee this early because they are a competitive and successful program and we wanted to see how we would compare before heading into spring training. The day was very successful for us because we able to go head-to-head with them over the course of the day in both 4's and 8's. We saw that our work is paying off which just inspires us to work even harder. We are looking forward to a fun and successful spring season."
For the novice squad, the morning of racing marked the first collegiate competition for the entire roster and the first rowing competition of any sort for most of it, since most of the squad members had not rowed before trying out for the team in the fall.
"I was really proud of the way the team competed this weekend," said novice coach Chelsea Pemberton. "We put up a good fight in all of the races, and came out on top for most of the day. The lessons we learned will be invaluable to us for the rest of the season, and I am excited to see how much we can learn and grow during our spring break training trip and throughout the rest of the season."
The Tar Heels will spend their upcoming spring break on a training trip in Lake Lure, N.C. They'll wrap up the week of work with a race against George Mason on March 15 at Lake Lure.
