Carolina Visits Rival Wolfpack Saturday
November 2, 2013 | Football
Carolina improved to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the ACC after earning its first league win with a 34-10 victory over Boston College. The Tar Heels allowed just 261 total yards to the Eagles, including only 59 via the pass. Quarterbacks Bryn Renner and Marquise Williams combined to complete 22 of 29 pass attempts for 283 yards and three touchdowns, including two to freshman wide receiver Bug Howard.
NC State enters Saturday's game 3-4 overall and 0-4 in conference action. The Wolfpack lost 49-17 to Florida State Saturday in Tallahassee.
The Tar Heels won last year's game vs. NC State, 43-35, when Giovani Bernard returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown with 13 seconds remaining. The Tar Heels, decked out in chrome helmets and an all dark blue uniform, jumped ahead 25-7 in the first quarter and then had to rally in the fourth to win it. The win was Larry Fedora's first over the Wolfpack and it snapped the Tar Heels' five-game losing streak to their in-state rival.

NC STATE SERIES NOTES
• North Carolina leads the series with NC State, 64-32-6, including last year's 43-35 win in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels had lost five straight to the Wolfpack before last year's victory. Carolina has not won in Raleigh since a 31-24 victory in 2005. Overall, the Tar Heels are 27-14-4 in Raleigh. Carolina's most recent trip to Carter-Finley Stadium ended in a 13-0 shutout loss.
• The Carolina-NC State series is the fourth-most played in ACC history. Carolina is part of four of the five most played series in ACC history.
• The team that has held the rushing advantage has won 19 of the last 21 meetings. The lone exceptions came in 2004 when Carolina won 30-24, but was outgained on the ground, 304-164, and in 2009 when Carolina had 159 rushing yards to NC State's 76 in a 28-27 Wolfpack victory.
QUICK HITS
• Carolina's defense allowed just 59 passing yards in Saturday's win over Boston College, the fewest by an opponent since Clemson threw for 37 yards in a UNC win in Death Valley on Nov. 15, 1997. The Tar Heels allowed just 10 points, the fewest since a shutout victory last year vs. Idaho.
• Since returning from a foot injury that caused him to miss the Virginia Tech game, QB Bryn Renner has completed 46 of 57 pass attempts (.807) for 524 yards and three touchdowns in games against Miami and Boston College.
• Renner needs 32 passing yards to move past Georgia Tech's Reggie Ball and into 20th place in the ACC career passing chart. Renner is one of three quarterbacks in school history with 8,000 career passing yards (8,097). He needs just 17 attempts to reach 1,000 for his career.
• TE Eric Ebron needs just 27 yards to break his own school record for receiving yards by a tight end (625 in 2012). He enters the NC State game with 599 receiving yards. He also needs just five receptions to equal his school record of 40 receptions, also set in 2012.
• QB Marquise Williams has been the Tar Heels' leading rusher in two of the last three games. He had a team-high 56 rushing yards vs. Virginia Tech and 55 vs. Boston College.
• WR Quinshad Davis had just eight catches for 93 yards in the first three games. In his last four games, he has 22 catches for 322 yards. Davis also threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Thorpe against ECU.
• Four Tar Heels have made 30 or more career starts. OT James Hurst leads the way with 43, followed by DE Kareem Martin (35), S Tre Boston (34) and QB Bryn Renner (31).
• Renner established a new single-game UNC record for consecutive completions with 15 against Miami, breaking the previous record of 14 set by Kevin Anthony vs. Wake Forest in 1985, Jason Stanicek vs. NC State in 1992 and Renner against James Madison in 2011.
• Renner ranks third in the ACC and 21st in the country, averaging 273.5 yards passing per game.
• Renner has 10 touchdown passes this year and is in second place on the all-time UNC career chart with 64. Darian Durant, now a Canadian Football League star, is the career leader with 68.
• Former walk-on linebacker Jeff Schoettmer has started every game this season and leads the team with 57 tackles, including a career-high 13 stops against Virginia Tech.
