Carolina Finishes Fall With Successful Day Of Racing

The UNC rowing team wrapped up its fall season Saturday with a successful day of racing at the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. "It was a very good day," said UNC coach Sarah Haney. "This is the best we've done collectively at this race on the varsity side in a long time."
The Carolina varsity eight was seventh in the Championship 8+, with the second varsity eight finishing 21st. UNC then split up its varsity eight to make two varsity fours that raced in the Championship 4+, finishing ninth and 10th.
"It was windier than we're used to and that took us by surprise in the eight, but we were very prepared for it in the four," Haney said. "The varsity eight had a great race and felt like if they'd handled the wind better they could have been in the top five, so we challenged them to prove that by putting both 4s in the top 10."
The Tar Heels did just that, with the two boats finishing just .8 seconds apart.
UNC also raced two novice boats, finishing 26th of 47 in the novice eight and 17th of 31 in the novice four.
Because of a cancelled race in October (the Occoquan Chase wasn't held due to water conditions), it was just UNC's second race of the fall even thought it was also the final one. The team starts winter training on Tuesday. "We talked a lot about this being the culmination of our fall, in particular because we only had one other race," Haney said. "We've had a really good fall and talked about making sure they had the race they earned and deserve, and we felt like they did that."
