CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carolina defeated Clemson 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23) Friday night, grabbing a much-needed win back at home to improve to 21-3 and 10-3 in ACC play.
Friday's win was a solid team effort as five Tar Heels finished with 10+ kills, led by Jovana Bjelica's 14 kills and 14 digs. Kayla Berringer registered a career-high 12 digs in addition to six kills and two blocks, while Paige Neuenfeldt had 10 kills with five blocks.
Hayley McCorkle tied her career high with 10 kills and three blocks, and Ece Taner tied her career high with 28 digs. Lauren Adkins had 10 kills and two blocks, and Victoria McPherson added another 12 kills for a balanced Carolina offensive match.
"It was great to get a victory again back at home," head coach Joe Sagula said. "I thought it was impressive how Kayla and Jovana came in and handled serve-receive and defense for us - they really stepped up and did a great job. We had a pretty good balanced attack, but we still have things we need to improve. We're going to keep demanding better things from our team and get tougher so we can play better and better volleyball."
The Tar Heels took set one 25-19 as Neuenfeldt posted five kills and a block, and McPherson and Bjelica each added four kills apiece.
Carolina took the second frame by the same score, as Lauren Adkins tallied four kills and McCorkle added three kills and two blocks for UNC. Neuenfeldt added another two blocks, a kill and three aces to put the Tar Heels up 2-0.
Clemson took advantage of 11 Tar Heel errors in the third set, taking the 25-22 win as the Tigers' Moneshia Simmons and Leah Perri combined for 11 kills. Bjelica had another five kills, and Berringer posted three kills with two blocks for Carolina.
McPherson put down another five kills to help UNC take the match with a 25-23 set five win. Bjelica added four kills and six digs, and Berringer tallied three kills with six digs as the Tar Heels grabbed the victory.
