UNC Finishes Fifth in EAGL

The Tar Heels took fifth place with a score of 194.225 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League championship Saturday in Carmichael Arena. With a 195.175, NC State ranked first with Maryland and Pittsburgh standing in second and third, respectively.
Floor exercise was North Carolina's best event. Freshman Lexi Cappalli landed in second place in the event, tying her personal best performance.
"Our team performance on floor was exceptional," said Galvin. "The energy, the quality, the way that they performed their routines was really good."
Starting off on the uneven bars, the Tar Heels posted a 48.475. Senior co-captain Elizabeth Durkac led the team with a 9.750, while sophomore Haley Watts was close behind with a 9.700. Junior Emily Cornwell along with freshman Josselyn Mackey and Cappalli earned a 9.675 to round out the event for UNC.
Following a bye, Carolina took to the balance beam where the team totaled a 48.025. Durkac again topped the Tar Heels as she scored a 9.825. Watts notched a 9.775, and fellow sophomore Janell Sargent came in third for UNC with a 9.750. Redshirt junior Meredith Magjuka tallied a 9.700. Unfortunately, Carolina had to count a fall, finishing the event with a 8.975 from senior and co-captain Maura Masatsugu.
"Balance beam wasn't what we were planning," said Galvin. "The first four people up on beam did a good job, but we just couldn't close it out. That was the difference for us between being in the top two or three versus finishing fifth."
UNC had a solid performance on floor as Cappalli matched her personal best, 9.850, and Watts was not far behind with a 9.800. Durkac and Ikoma each were awarded a 9.775 for their performances. Freshman Sarah Peterson earned a 9.725 as Carolina combined for a 48.925.
On the vault the Tar Heels amassed a 48.750 with Peterson leading the charge, scoring a 9.800. Ikoma and Cappalli tied as each tallied a 9.750. Durkac and Watts also paired up with a 9.725 to finish the event.
Durkac and Cappalli were awarded All-Tournament Team honors. Durkac was recognized for her performance on the beam and in the all-around while Cappalli captured the title on floor exercise.
"Overall it was a great weekend," said Galvin. "I'm so proud to be a coach here at Carolina where things are done in a really first class way."

The teams garnering bids to the regional round of the NCAA tournament will be announced Monday. The top 36 teams in the nation will receive an invitation. UNC has earned a spot in regionals the last 11 years.
