Heels Advance To Semis With 6-2 Victory

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Carolina advances to the semifinals of the 2013 ACC Softball Tournament after a 6-2 victory over Georgia Tech Thursday night at Florida State's JoAnne Graf Field.
Haleigh Dickey tied the ACC Tournament record of two home runs in a single game after blasting solo shots in the fourth and sixth innings to help lead the Tar Heels over the Yellow Jackets.
UNC will now face No. 1 seed and tournament host Florida State in the semifinals Friday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be shown live on RSN and ESPN3. View a complete listing of RSN affiliates here.
"I'm really proud of the performance we had tonight, especially Lori on the mound and Haleigh and Amber's hitting," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "The team played very well, and they were very focused, very controlled, throughout the entire game. We played with a lot of confidence, and we have a really good feel heading into tomorrow's game against Florida State."
In the first, Dickey reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on a single to center by Amber Parrish. After Stephanie Krider came in to run for Dickey, Constance Orr singled to third to load the Carolina bases. Jenna Kelly then singled to right, scoring Krider to put Carolina up 1-0.
In the second, Erin Satterfield led off with a walk and scored on a hard-hit double down the left field line by Kristen Brown. Mateen then hit an infield single and stole second before both Tar Heels scored on a single to left by Parrish, increasing UNC's lead to 4-0 after two.
After a quick scoreless third, Dickey smashed her 11th homer of the season and 42nd of her career out center in the fourth, making it 5-0 Carolina.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth, as Ashley Thomas singled to right, advancing to second on a ground out by Hayley Downs before scoring on a double to left by Alysha Rudnik. Hope Rush then drew a walk, and single to center by Katie Johnsky drove in Rudnik to make it 5-2.
Dickey tacked on another run for Carolina in the sixth, hitting her second solo shot of the game to left center for the Tar Heels' final run.
Lori Spingola (29-12) pitched the complete game for the win, striking out six while giving up five hits and three walks as Carolina improved to 39-18 on the season.
