Monroe Rallies For Wimbledon Doubles Win

WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND - 2004 University of North Carolina alumnus Nicholas Monroe paired with Simon Stadler of Germany to score a come-from-behind win Monday afternoon in the opening round of Gentlemen's Doubles at the 2013 Wimbledon Championship.
Monroe is teamed this year in doubles with 29-year-old Simon Stadler of Heidelberg, Germany. Monroe is ranked 73rd in the world in doubles and Stadler is ranked 74th. The duo met Purav Raja and Divij Sharan of India in the opening round of doubles, scoring a five-set victory.
After dropping the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4), Monroe and Stadler also lost the second set 6-2. But they recovered and carried momentum through the remainder of the match, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the final three sets.
The second round pairing, date and time will be announced later.
Monroe was an All-America at UNC, graduating in 2004. He is a native of Olathe, Kan.
Monroe was not the only Tar Heel in action Monday as incoming freshman Ronnie Schneider of Bloomington, Ind., has advanced to the finals of the Midwest Sectional Qualifying in the 2013 U.S. Open National Playoffs in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Schneider defeated Wyatt Lippert of Ohio State 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals Monday and will face Kevin Metka in the finals.
