January 23, 2014 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina gymnastics team will host its second home meet of the season against Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. in Carmichael Arena. It also is Carolina Kids Club Day at the gymnastics meet.
Carolina, now with a record of 2-2, looks to bounce back after a difficult performance at NC State's invitational last Friday. The Tar Heels finished third, defeating Towson but falling short to Michigan and NC State. Haley Watts competed in all four events to lead the team with an all-around score of 38.700. Also contributing for the Tar Heels was Janell Sargent with a 9.825 on vault, Christina Pheil and Lexi Cappalli, each earning a 9.850 on floor, and Michelle Ikoma, who tied for fourth place overall on bars with a score of 9.825.
"We had some strong individual performances," said coach Derek Galvin. "But it's the little things that count. We need to be more mentally focused throughout the entire meet."
The University of Maryland (1-1) will be coming to Chapel Hill off a win over West Virginia last Friday, 193.675 to 193.500. Sunday's meet against the Heels will mark the Terrapin's first EAGL competition.
Looking ahead, UNC will take on the University of Pittsburgh at home next Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
