Weather Suspended Ruth's Chris Play, Tar Heels in 8th

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The second round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational was suspended due to weather at 3:25 p.m., and play was called at 4:34 p.m. Play will resume at 8 a.m. Sunday for the conclusion of the second round, and the third round will follow with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m.
North Carolina has jumped two places in play during the second round thus far, and stands in a tie for 8th.
"Our team is playing well. We started out a little rough, but came back and we're doing well," said head coach Jan Mann. "We were disappointed that we didn't get to finish up, but we're looking forward to tomorrow morning and another 18 after we complete the last four holes from today's round."
As it stands, senior Maia Schechter stands in a tie for 6th place with a 2-under 70 from the first round. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., has recorded two birdies and two bogeys for an even par round so far. Bryana Nguyen, a freshman from Columbia, Md., stands at a 4-over with a 3-over 75 from day one. For day two, Nguyen is a stroke behind her teammate with a birdie and two bogeys at a 1-over score and is in a tie at 29th
Sophomore Leslie Cloots is set to continue the second round with a 3-over score. Cloots, a native of Antwerp, Belgium, carded two birdies and five bogeys, and stands in 42nd place with a 6-over and a 3-over 75 in the first day of play. Also at a 1-over-par for the day is freshman Lexi Harkins of Crystal Lake, Ill. Harkins registered two birdies and three bogeys on Saturday and is tied for 47th with a 7-over and her day one score of a 6-over 78. Junior Elizabeth Mallett is tied for 66th with a 9-over. Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, shot two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey for a 2-over so far for day two, in addition to her score of a 7-over 79 on the first day.
Also, Tar Heel sophomore Rachel Jones is competing as an individual. Jones, of Asheboro, N.C., finished round two with a 9-over 81. Jones, the only Tar Heel to finish her round for the day, stands in 93rd place with a 19-over 163.
South Carolina remains in first while continuing the second round of play. Duke also stayed in second, and Wake Forest stands in third. NC State is in fourth, and Vanderbilt moved up to fifth. Virginia and Oregon are tied for sixth, and North Carolina and Arkansas are tied for eighth. LSU stands alone in 10th, and Auburn and Alabama stand in a tie for 11th. Florida is in 13th, and Louisville and Michigan State are tied for 14th. Rollins and Oklahoma are in a tie for 16th, and Mississippi concludes the field of teams in 18th.
"Everyone was disappointed that we couldn't finish up today, but with the cooperation of the maintenance and club staff we plan to finish off tomorrow morning early before the shotgun start at 9:15."
The Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational is being played at the UNC Finley Golf Course, which features a par 72, 6,379-yard layout. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com and Golfstat.com. The public is invited to attend the event and admission is free of charge.
