UNC Top Collegiate Crew At Occoquan Chase
October 13, 2014 | Women's Rowing
The UNC rowing team enjoyed a day of success Sunday at the Occoquan Chase, finishing as the first collegiate crew in each race it entered. Racing took place on a three-mile course at the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va., and the event included more than 300 entries.
"It was a great day for us," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "An absolutely awesome performance."
UNC boats finished first and fourth in the women's open 8+, first in the freshman eight, and second, third, eighth, ninth and 14th in the women's open 4+, which was won by a club team.
UNC's varsity eight won the women's open 8+ in a time of 18:39.62. The UNC second varsity eight was fourth in 19:27.91. "We had a great day in the varsity eight," Haney said. "They raced really well and picked up the momentum they finished with last weekend against Old Dominion and put it out there over the course of the race today. I felt really good about how they performed, not only their technical ability but their approach to the race.
"I think our second eight definitely took a step in the right direction, coming in fourth in that same event and putting together a good race."
Racing in the varsity eight were Kylee Wooten (coxswain), Victoria McGee, Egan Berne, Sarah Priest, Chelsea Gustafson, Lauren Colberg, Emily Leidolf, Katherine Summerton and Kathryn McCormick.
In the second varsity eight were Sarah Eastley (coxswain), Amanda Truesdell, Ali Margherio, Stephanie Wangerin, Elise Widman, Mallory Young, Kate Elliott, Allie Martin and Steph Henrich.
UNC also won the College Freshmen/Novice 8+ race, finishing in 20:14.35. The Tar Heels were more than 90 seconds faster than the second-place boat.
The Open Women's 4+ was won by a club team, with UNC as the fastest collegiate boat. The first four finished in 9:47.38, less than two seconds out of first place. Carolina's second four was just behind at 19:51.31. "We were the fastest college team out there - that's really positive for us and positive that our top two fours beat the next college's fastest four," Haney said. "I feel like that was a pretty impressive showing for Carolina rowing."
The varsity eight lineup became the first two fours and finished four second apart. The second varsity eight became the third and fourth, and finished 20 seconds apart, in eighth (21:15.33) and ninth (21:35.14) places. The UNC novice four, racing in a varsity event, placed 14th.
