Tar Heels Kick Off Spring With Successful Scrimmage
March 1, 2015 | Women's Rowing
Early in the season, success is all about making progress, and in that regard Saturday's scrimmage race at Tennessee was a smashing success for the UNC rowing team.
The fact the Tar Heels got to enjoy crossing the line first in 10 of 11 pieces made the morning even better.
“It was a great kickstart to our season and I'm really proud of everybody that competed for Carolina rowing today,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “It was phenomenal and I couldn't be prouder. “
The Tar Heels fielded two varsity eights, two novice eights and four varsity fours. For the novices, it was the first taste of collegiate-level racing and came against a program that has made eight NCAA Championships appearances. For the varsity, it was the first outside competition since last October, following a winter of training and a snow-hampered start to the spring season.
After having been on the water just once in the past two weeks, Haney went into Saturday's scrimmage at Tennessee with three goals for her team. “We wanted to work on holding our technique, maximize our horsepower and attack from stroke one,” she said. “We absolutely accomplished those goals.”
Because it was a scrimmage, the teams didn't record times or official results, but all of the Tar Heels headed home to Chapel Hill pleased with the day. “That's some of the best racing I've seen from us, especially the varsity eight,” Haney said. “They kept their composure, they stayed in their game and did what they do well.
“We definitely can work on things technically – we're not perfect by any means, but I do think we handled the cold conditions and the fact that we hadn't been on the water in a while incredibly well.”
After a week of classes, the Tar Heels will head for spring training at Lake Lure, N.C., during UNC's spring break. The week will culminate with racing against George Mason at Lake Lure on March 14.
