UNC Postgame Notes
North Carolina 48, Georgia Tech 43
• Carolina won for the first time in five games this season and snapped a five-game losing streak against Georgia Tech with a 48-43 victory. Sophomore T.J. Logan scored the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 11 seconds to play.
• Quarterback Marquise Williams completed 38 of 47 pass attempts for 390 yards and four touchdowns. At one point in the second half, Williams completed 14 consecutive attempts, one shy of the school record.
• Williams set the UNC record for completions in a game with 38 (previous was 33 by T.J. Yates vs. NC State in 2010). He also set the UNC record for completions in consecutive games with 62. The previous record was 61 by Yates in 2010.
• Williams broke the school record for completions in a half with 23 second-half completions. The previous mark was 19 by Mark Maye and Bryn Renner (twice).
• Williams attempted 47 passes, which equals the third-most in a game in UNC history.
• Williams threw for 390 yards, the eighth-most in UNC single-game history.
• Williams also rushed for 73 yards and gained 463 yards of total offense, the second-most in UNC single-game history. The record is 469 by Williams last year against Old Dominion. Last week at Notre Dame, he had 435 total offense yards, which is now the fourth-most in school history. Williams has compiled three of the four highest single-game total offense performances in Carolina's last nine games dating back to the Old Dominion game last November.
• Williams has a school-record 898 total offense yards in the last two games (435 at Notre Dame and 463 tonight). The previous mark was 796 by Williams against ODU and Duke last year.
• Williams also has 1,521 total offense yards in the last four games, a school record for any four-game stretch. The previous high was 1,322 by Bryn Renner in 2012.
• Tonight was the fourth time in his career that Williams has thrown for more than 300 yards.
• Williams connected with Bug Howard on an 8-yard TD pass in the first quarter, threw touchdown passes to Ryan Switzer for 68 and 15 yards in the second quarter and tossed a 36-yard TD pass (on 4th-and-6) to Mack Hollins in the fourth quarter.
• Tonight marked the third time in his career that Williams has thrown four or more touchdowns in a game.
• Williams moved into 6th place at UNC with 31 career touchdown passes. He moved ahead of Ronald Curry (28) and Scott Stankavage (30).
• Williams moved past Mike Thomas into 7th place in UNC history in career total offense yards with 4,771.
• Williams moved past Scott Stankavage, Kevin Anthony and Mark Maye into 9th place in UNC history in career passing yards with 3,601.
• Williams scored on a 13-yard run in the third quarter. It was the 13th rushing score of his career, which ties the UNC record for career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with Ronald Curry (1998-2001).
• Sophomore wide receiver Ryan Switzer had a career-high nine receptions for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns. It is the second 100-yard receiving game of his career. He had 118 vs. Old Dominion in 2013. It is also the second time he caught two TD passes in a game (had two against Old Dominion last year).
• Sophomore tailback T.J. Logan rushed for a season-high 75 yards on 14 carries. His previous high this season was 45 yards vs. Liberty.
• Defensive end Junior Gnonkonde posted a career-high seven tackles, all in the first half. He also had a sack.
• Defensive end Dajuan Drennon had two tackles for losses including a quarterback sack, his second of the season.
• Carolina's 21-17 halftime lead marked the first time the Tar Heels held the lead at the half since the season opener vs. Liberty.
• Ten different Tar Heels made at least one reception this evening.
• TB Romar Morris scored his fourth rushing TD of the season on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 35-24 lead.
• The two teams combined for 1,190 total offense yards, the most ever in a game in Kenan Stadium history. Previous high was 1,166 by UNC and Maryland in 1993. Tonight, Georgia Tech gained 611 yards and UNC amassed 579. The 611 yards by the Yellow Jackets are the ninth-most by an opponent in any game and the second-most in a Tar Heel victory (Arizona State had 657 in 2002 in a UNC win).
• In the last two weeks, Carolina has played in the highest scoring game in Notre Dame Stadium history (93 points, began play there in 1930) and the most total offense yards in Kenan Stadium history (began play here in 1927).
• The Tar Heels committed a season-low four penalties totaling a season-low 35 yards (previous lows were five for 37 against San Diego State).
• Carolina converted 10 of 15 third-down opportunities, a season-best percentage of .667. The previous bests were 9 of 17 (.529) against both Liberty and Notre Dame.
• The Tar Heels also converted both of their fourth-down chances, including a 36-yard TD pass from Williams to Hollins that gave UNC a 42-31 lead early in the final quarter.
• Carolina had a season-high 31 first downs against Georgia Tech. That is the second consecutive week the Tar Heels compiled a season high in first downs. They had 30 against Notre Dame.
• Carolina has gained 1,100 total offense yards in the last two games (521 against Notre Dame and 579 against Georgia Tech).
• The 43 points are the most scored by Georgia Tech in a Tar Heel victory (previous was 24 in 1994 in a 31-24 Carolina win).
• The teams have combined for 209 points in the last two games played in Kenan Stadium. Georgia Tech beat Carolina, 68-50, in Chapel Hill in 2012.
