Murray Joins Schneider in ITA Singles Main Draw

TULSA, Okla. - North Carolina sophomore Jack Murray notched his sixth singles win in five days on Wednesday in the third round of the ITA All-American qualifying draw at Case Tennis Center. With the victory, Murray will join teammate Ronnie Schneider in the main singles draw.
Murray defeated Florida State's Marco Nunez 6-2, 6-3 to complete his run through the qualifying singles bracket. The Michigan native was one of 16 players to earn his way to the qualifying draw by way of the initial pre-qualifying tournament. Of those 16, only four, including Murray, are moving on to the main draw.
Carolina freshman Robert Kelly, who also battled through pre-qualifying, narrowly missed a berth to the singles main draw. He suffered his first defeat as a Tar Heel to Louisville's No. 110 Sebastian Stiefelmeyer in third round of the qualifying draw, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
In doubles action, both Tar Heel pairs were ousted in the qualifying draw. Murray and Schneider were edged by Mississippi State's Julian Cash and Florian Lakat 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the second round, while junior Brett Clark and senior Oystein Steiro fell 6-4, 6-4 in the third round to Clemon's 24th-ranked (and third-seeded) duo of Alejandro Augusto and Hunter Harrington.
Play in the singles main draw, which features 32 players, will begin on Thursday. Murray is scheduled to face Harvard's 18th-ranked Denis Nguyen (9-16) at 10 a.m. CST. Schneider, ranked 23rd nationally, will take on 37th-ranked Alen Salibasic of Drake University at 8 a.m. CST. Last fall, Schneider - then a freshman - advanced to the main draw's final 16.
