Carolina Golf Alumni Continue in LPGA Qualifier

VENICE, FLA. - North Carolina alumni golfers Katherine Perry and Catherine O'Donnell are competing in the LPGA Qualifying Tournament Stage II. Perry, of Cary, N.C., vaulted into 34th place with a 1-over-par 145, and O'Donnell jumped into 69th with an overall 3-over 147.
Perry, who was a starter for the Tar Heels the last four years and now a volunteer assistant coach, fired a 1-under par 70 in play for round two. In combination with her 3-over 75 in the first round, Perry stands in a tie fro 34th with a 1-over 145 approaching the third round. She advanced to the Stage II Qualifying after tying for fourth place at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament Stage I. Perry, a 2012 All-ACC performer, was second on the team last year with a 75.03 stroke average. She was a starter in all 10 of Carolina's tournaments last year, carding five top-30 finishes. Perry tied for fifth place at the ACC Championships and tied for 15th at the NCAA Central Regional.
O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., recorded an even-par 72 in the second round. O'Donnell stands in a tie for 69th place with a 3-over 147. During her time at Carolina, she was a four-time All-ACC performer, an All-America and was selected the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2009. She won three collegiate tournaments and won a 2013 SunCoast Ladies Tour event. She had played on the Symetra Tour the last two years and has carded four top-10 finishes. O'Donnell participated in the 2014 U.S. Women's Open in Pinehurst. She was a gold medal winner at the 2010 University World Championships and represented Team USA in the 2011 University World Games.
The event continues through Oct. 3 and is being played at the Plantation Golf and Country Club on the Panther and Bobcat courses. The first group will tee off at 8 am, and both O'Donnell and Perry will navigate the Panther Course, a par 72, 6,226-yard layout.
