North Carolina 28, Virginia 27
• Carolina has won consecutive games after starting the season 2-4. The Tar Heels have beaten the Cavaliers five consecutive times, including three straight in Charlottesville.
• The Tar Heels lead the series, 62-53-4. This is UNC's longest winning streak against the Cavaliers since the Tar Heels won nine straight from 1974-82.
• Larry Fedora is now 5-0 against Virginia as a head coach (2-0 at Southern Miss and 3-0 as UNC's head coach).
• Carolina has won three in a row in Charlottesville for the first time since winning in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1981.
• This is just the second time in series history that Carolina defeated Virginia by a single point. The only other one-point win by the Tar Heels came in 1927, a 14-13 UNC victory in the first game ever played in Kenan Stadium.
• Marquise Williams' 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the longest rush of his career. It was the 14th rushing touchdown of his career, which is a school record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. The previous record was 13 by Ronald Curry (1998-2001).
• Williams is now sixth in UNC history in total offense with 5,079 yards. He moved past legendary Charlie Justice today and is 419 yards shy of passing Jason Stanicek for fifth place. The only Tar Heels with 5,000 career total offense yards are Darien Durant (9,630), T.J. Yates (9,044), Bryn Renner (8,128), Ronald Curry (6,236), Stanicek (5,497) and Williams.
• Williams had 308 total offense yards today and has 2,532 for the season. He is tied with T.J. Yates (2,532 in 2007) for the sixth-most total offense yards in UNC single-season history.
• Williams passed for 259 yards today and has thrown for 3,860 yards in his career, the seventh most in school history. He moved past Chris Keldorf (3,795) and Matt Kupec (3,840) today.
• Williams threw a pair of touchdown passes, both to Mack Hollins. Williams has 17 scoring passes this year and 33 in his career. He is tied for fifth place in school history with Matt Kupec.
• Williams led the Tar Heels in rushing with 49 yards. This is the fourth time this year and the third time in the last four games that Williams has led UNC in rushing. He has led UNC on the ground against San Diegio State (63 yards), Virginia Tech (94), Notre Dame (132) and Virginia (49). He leads the Tar Heels for the season with 497 rushing yards. He came into the game as one of six players nationally to lead their teams in both passing and rushing yards.
• Wide receiver Mack Hollins had a 57-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and a 63-yard scoring catch in the second quarter. He leads the team with seven touchdown catches. Hollins has three of the six longest pass receptions by a Tar Heel this season. He caught a school-record 91-yarder against San Diego State.
• Hollins' had a career-high 120 yards receiving - all coming in the first half. His previous high was 110 yards against San Diego State. Hollins also recovered an onside kick by Nick Weiler with under four minutes to play, moments after UNC had taken its first lead of the game at 28-27.
• Quarterback Mitch Trubisky came off the bench after Williams had his helmet ripped off on a sack and completed his only pass of the day for a 16-yard score to T.J. Thorpe. That gave UNC a 28-27 lead with 4:05 to play in the fourth quarter.
• The touchdown pass was Trubisky's only play in the game and was his first completion since the Virginia Tech game and his first touchdown pass since the East Carolina game. It was his third TD pass of the season.
• T.J. Thorpe caught the game-winning touchdown pass, his third of the season and his first since Clemson.
• Carolina has picked off at least one pass in seven of eight games this season. Today, cornerback Des Lawrence and defensive tackle Nazair Jones recorded the first interceptions of their careers. Lawrence made his first career interception in the third quarter at the UNC 2-yard line on 3rd-and-goal from the 10. Jones picked off a pass in the fourth quarter and rumbled 20 yards to the Virginia 38-yard line.
