Carolina Cruises 3-0 Over Campbell
October 8, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (7-4) has scored at least three goals in three straight matches for the first time since back in 2001, the year the program won its first National Championship.
Senior Andy Craven opened the scoring with his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute.
Tyler Engel sent a cross directly into the goal area and Craven put his header into the net from six yards that resulted in his fourth game winner of 2014.
Late in the opening half, a brilliant service from David October in the 40th minute found the head of Alan Winn but the ball whistled off the cross bar, keeping the match a 1-0 Tar Heel advantage at intermission.
Scoring opportunities continued for UNC in the second half. Engel missed a gift-wrapped goal in the 50th minute when Winn set him up on a short cross into the box.
In the 61st minute, midfielder Omar Holness took a crack that hit the left post. The ball fell directly at the feet of Engel and he sent a rocket ball directly in the hands of the Campbell keeper.
Minutes later, senior Rob Lovejoy made it 2-0 when he finished into the left side of the goal off assists from Winn and Engel in the 66th minute.
Campbell (3-6) registered its first shot of the match in the 68th minute. A few minutes later Cameron Mulvey hit the post for the Camels as they tried to rally from down two goals.
Nyambi Jabang led all players with six shots and it took his last opportunity of the evening to make it 3-0. He was dragged down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick by the referee. He stepped up and converted the PK for his second goal of the season in the 87th minute.
Campbell keeper Matthew Mozynski was outstanding in net, coming up with a career-high 11 saves.
Brendan Moore made one save to record his fifth clean sheet of his senior campaign.
North Carolina enjoyed a 27-4 shot advantage over the Camels and held a 14-0 edge in corners.
UNC hosts Virginia Tech in a critical ACC match on Friday at 7 p.m., on ESPN3. Both clubs are tied in the league standings with six points, a mere one point behind Coastal Division leaders Notre Dame and Virginia.
