Tar Heels Headed To Detroit's Quick Lane Bowl
December 7, 2014 | Football
Chapel Hill – The University of North Carolina has accepted an invitation to represent the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2014 Quick Lane Bowl on Friday, Dec. 26, at 4:30 p.m. The game will be played at Ford Field in Detroit, and will be televised by ESPN. The Tar Heels will face Rutgers of the Big 10 Conference.
“We're thankful for the opportunity to play in the Quick Lane Bowl and continue our season,” said head coach Larry Fedora. “Detroit is a passionate football city and our team will be excited for the chance to practice and play in an NFL stadium. We will be working hard over the next few weeks to take advantage of this opportunity to finish the season strong.”
Rams Club members and 2014 season ticket holders can request ticket to the Quick Lane Bowl at GoHeels.com. Priority deadline for those groups is Monday, Dec. 15, at 5 p.m. Tickets are also available for the general public on GoHeels.com.
“Playing in the Quick Lane Bowl is an exciting opportunity for our students, coaches and staff,” said UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham. “We're pleased for the chance to continue to practice, and play another game, with a young team as we build to the future.”
This will be Fedora's sixth bowl appearance as a head coach. Last year, he guided the Tar Heels to a 39-17 victory over Cincinnati in the Belk Bowl. The Quick Lane Bowl is Carolina's 31st all-time bowl game, but first in the state of Michigan. Carolina has won two of its last three bowl games.
The Tar Heels are third in the ACC, averaging 34.3 point per game, and are led by second-team All-ACC quarterback Marquise Williams. The Charlotte, N.C., native leads the team in both passing (2,870) and rushing yards (737). This year, he set UNC single-season record for total offense (3,607), most touchdowns responsible for (32) and most touchdowns rushing by a quarterback (12).
Rutgers finished the season 7-5 overall, 3-5 in the Big 10's East division. In their season finale last Saturday, the Scarlet Knights defeated Maryland, 41-38.
This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams and the fifth since 2006. Rutgers played in Chapel Hill in 2006 and 2011 and the Tar Heels visited Piscataway in 2008 and 2010.
