Women Golfers In 12th Place At Northrop Grumman

PALOS VERDES, CALIF. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the Northrop Grumman Challenge. Carolina carded an 18-over-par 302 in Sunday's first round. Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett led the Tar Heels by firing a 2-over 73.
Mallett , from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded two birdies and four bogeys on the day for her 2-over 73 which put her tied for 24th after the first round. Two Tar Heels are tied for 41st at 5-over 76, freshman Leslie Cloots from Wilrijk, Antwerp, Belgium, and sophomore Samantha Marks from Maitland, Fla. Katherine Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., was one stroke back at 6-over 77 in a tie for 54th going into the second round. Senior Jackie Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot an 81 and is tied for 81st.
Baylor fired a 2-over-par 286 to grab the first-round lead over the 16-team field. Southern California is two strokes back in second place at 4-over 288. UCLA and Duke are tied for third at 6-over 290 while three teams are tied for fifth at 8-over 292 - Arizona, Washington and Oklahoma.
Annie Park of Southern California fired a 4-under 67 to grab the individual lead. Louise Gateau-Choveion or Baylor and Yu Liu of Duke are one stroke back in a tie for second place at 3-under 68. Sierra Sims of Wake Forest is alone in fourth place at 2-under 69 while Kyung Kim of Southern California is in fifth place at 1-under 70.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday at the Palos Verdes Golf Club which features a par 71, 6,017-yard layout. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
