Heels Play At Unbeaten Notre Dame On Thursday
February 26, 2014 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina (21-7, 9-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has performed well on the biggest stages this season with top 10 road wins at Duke and NC State. Toss in a neutral site victory back in December over potential NCAA one seed South Carolina and the Tar Heels boast a resume as strong as any in the country.
It will take another great performance to take down a Fighting Irish club that is 27-0 and has already clinched the ACC regular season with two games to play this week.
These two powerhouse programs have only met three times - all coming on neutral floors. The last was a 60-51 Tar Heel victory in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa. Notre Dame owns the other two wins in the series in early season tournaments during the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons.
Carolina has been an outstanding road team this season with a 7-1 overall mark, 6-1 inside the league. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is 14-0 at home in South Bend, Ind.
Thursday pits a Notre Dame team that leads the ACC in shooting at 51.3 percent against North Carolina's defense that has limited its opponents to a league best 35.3 percent from the field.
North Carolina wraps up the regular season on Sunday against No. 7/8 Duke at 1 p.m., on ESPN. The first 1,000 students in attendance will receive a Carolina blue 'Keep Calm and Beat Duke' shirt.
The first 250 kids (under 14) will eat for free at Carmichael Arena. At halftime, a special check presentation will be featured from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.
