UNC Wraps Up Spring Training With Racing Against GMU
March 15, 2014 | Women's Rowing
LAKE LURE, N.C. – The UNC rowing team wrapped up its spring break training camp Saturday with a morning of racing against George Mason on Lake Lure. Carolina took first in each race.
With no classes to keep them in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels have spent the past week at training camp in the Western part of the state. "We had a really, really good week," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We got a lot of productive water time and progressed with each practice. I didn't feel like the team had any lulls this week, mentally or physically, which is impressive for that many practices and that workload increase. They really responded well on technical practices, and really responded well when we worked on speed and ratings and getting our 2Ks up."
The visit by George Mason was an opportunity to put all of that hard work into action. Racing on flat water Saturday morning, the Tar Heel varsity four opened the day with a win, finishing in 8:20.73 to GMU's 8:35.0. Next up was the varsity eight, with UNC winning in 6:54.36 and GMU second in 7:22.19. UNC's second varsity eight also won its race (7:13.94), followed by the GMU second varsity eight (7:33.68), the UNC novice eight (7:52.49), and the UNC second novice eight (7:53.33)
To finish the day, the teams broke up their eights into fours for the final race. UNC's A boat won in 7:42.27.
"We were definitely excited going into this weekend against George Mason," Haney said. "We wanted to see how fast we could go down the racecourse and we felt like we did a pretty good job. We executed our race plan pretty well - there were definitely some things we can work on in all boats, but it was fun just to see them go out there and compete and do well.
"We always enjoy racing George Mason and we look forward to racing them again later this season."
The teams will meet again at both the Occoquan Sprints and the Knecht Cup. Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to face Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va., on March 22.
