espnW Selects DeShields As National Freshman Of The Year

DeShields, the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year and first team All-ACC selection, is averaging 18.0 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Tar Heels during the 2013-14 season.
The Norcross, Ga., native ranks sixth nationally among freshmen in scoring. DeShields led all ACC first-year players in league play at 19.8 ppg, while her 577 points scored this season is a Tar Heel freshman record and the second most in league history to Kaela Davis, who currently has 578 points this season for Georgia Tech.
DeShields is also closing in on three other ACC freshmen records: field goals made, field goals attempted and most double figure scoring games.
She is the only freshman on the John R. Wooden Award Final ballot that is made up of the top 15 players nationally.
North Carolina (24-9) will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 25 at Carmichael Arena.
The NCAA Selection Show will air Monday night at 7 p.m., on ESPN.
