March 18, 2014 | Men's Tennis
TORONTO, ONTARIO - Tennis Canada announced Monday that Brayden Schnur (Pickering, Ont.) and Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, Ont.) have been named the 2013 Tennis Canada Junior Players of the Year. Both members of Tennis Canada's full-time National Training Centre in Montreal, the two 18-year-olds made their marks on both the junior and professional circuits in their last year as junior competitors, highlighted by Schnur capturing the Canadian Open Junior Championships and his first pro-level title and Zhao winning the Junior Australian Open doubles title.
Schnur enrolled at Carolina in January and has been instrumental in helping lead UNC to a No. 11 national ranking and 15-2 record so far. He is undefeated in 12 dual matches singles contests this spring.
Schnur's best results in 2013 came in the second half of the season and began on the professional circuit on home soil. He ended the year ranked No. 550. In August, the former junior world No. 26 also became the first male Canadian to clinch the Canadian Open Junior Championships in Repentigny, Que., an ITF Grade 1 event and the biggest international junior tournament held in Canada each year.
"Congratulations to Brayden and Carol, whose incredible performances throughout all of last year made them the clear choices for male and female Junior Players of the Year," said Hatem McDadi, senior vice-president, tennis development, Tennis Canada. "They both have accomplished so much in their young careers already, and are now doing so well in the NCAA as well. I wish them the best of luck with their future careers, and I look forward to following their path."
The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards were introduced in 1982 and are presented annually to the country's top tennis players, coaches, officials, communities, and administrators in recognition of their outstanding contributions made to Canadian tennis.
