UNC Hosts No. 25 USC Upstate Thursday In Home Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina softball is set to open its 2014 home slate this Thursday against No. 25 USC Upstate.
After 16 games on the road, the Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill to face the Spartans at 4 p.m. at UNC's Anderson Stadium. Admission is free for all home softball games.

Scouting the Matchup
The Tar Heels are 10-1 all-time against the Spartans. Their last meeting was in 1994.
North Carolina: The Tar Heels are 8-8 (2-1 ACC) after winning their opening ACC series with Virginia Tech, 2-1. Aquilla Mateen, who had five hits and five RBIs to help lift the Tar Heels this past weekend, leads UNC with 13 runs and 24 hits while posting a .436 batting average. Amber Parrish (.324) and Kati Causey (.313) have 10 RBIs apiece, while Parrish and Kristen Brown have each belted five homers this season so far. Lori Spingola (.305 ERA) is 4-4 and picked up her first save of the year this past weekend. She has fanned 54 batters in 57.1 innings in the circle for Carolina.
No. 25 USC Upstate:The Spartans are undefeated at 19-0 (3-0 A-SUN) and face NC State in a doubleheader Wednesday night. Shellie Robinson leads Upstate with 28 RBIs and 23 runs, tallying 31 hits, including 10 homers, for a .508 batting average. Maddison Kieffer (.400) has 11 RBIs and 22 hits, and Erin Schattle has posted 15 RBIs on 18 hits. Lexi Shubert (9-0) has a 0.79 ERA with 57 strike outs and just eight runs surrendured in 53 innings. Anna Miller (1.12 ERA) and Hannah Alexander (1.15) are each 5-0 on the mound, and Miller has a team-high 71 strike outs in 43.2 innings.
