Women Golfers in Fourth in ACC Championships

The women's golf team at the University of North Carolina is currently in fourth at the ACC Women's Golf Championship firing a 15-over 299. Junior Maia Schechter, registering a 2-over 73, leads the team.
"Overall pleased with the team's performance today," stated Head Coach Jan Mann. "We let a few shots get away from us but the team is determined and we look forward to playing again tomorrow."
Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., recorded three birdies and five bogeys is tied for seventh place with a 2-over 73. Following closely at 3-over 74, Katherine Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., is in a tie for 12th. Perry finished the first round shooting two birdies and five bogeys. Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett carded a 4-over 75 and is tied for 14th. Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, recorded three birdies, two bogeys, and two double bogeys. Leslie Cloots, a freshman native of Antwerp, Belgium, registered a 6-over 77 with two birdies and eight bogeys. Cloots is in a tie for 27th place. Jackie Chang is in a tie for 32nd place. Chang, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot one birdie, five bogeys, and one double bogey for a 7-over 78.
Both Duke and Virginia are in a tie for first place carding a 7-over 291. Miami recorded a 14-over 298, and North Carolina follows closely at a 15-over 299. In a three-way tie for fifth, Notre Dame, Maryland, and Florida State each finish day one with a 22-over 306. Clemson and NC State are in eighth and ninth with a 23-over 307 and a 24-over 308, respectively. Ending day one, Wake Forest shot a 27-over 311, and Boston College shot a 51-over 335.
Florida State's Matilda Castren leads the field of 55 golfers registering the only under-par score of the day, 2-under 69. With an even par, both Virginia's Lauren Coughlin and Briana Mao as well as Duke's Celine Boutier are in a tie for second. Duke's Laetitia Beck and Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy are in a tie for fifth at a 1-over.
The ACC Women's Golf Championship continues through Saturday at the Sedgefield Country Club, a par 71, 6,107-yard layout. The tournament play resumes at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com and on Golfstat.com.
