Tar Heels Jump to Third in ACC Championships

The Tar Heels women golfers finished with a 29-over 597 in the second round of the ACC Women's Golf Championship. Both Elizabeth Mallett and Katherine Perry led the team to a third place standing with a two-day score of a 5-over 147.
"The team hung in there today," commented Head Coach Jan Mann. "Conditions were similar to yesterday. It was a hard fought round for some but really pleased with how they stayed patient. Rain expected for tomorrow, but we will be ready."
Mallett, a sophomore from Sutton Coldfield, England, and Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., are in a tie for seventh place at a 5-over 147. Mallet, after a second round score of a 1-over 72 and a first round score of a 4-over 75, fired three birdies and four bogeys on day two. Perry, following a 3-over 74 first round score, carded four birdies and six bogeys for a second round 2-over 73. Junior Maia Schechter, who recorded a 2-over 73 on day one and a 6-over 77 on day two, is standing in a tie for 17th place with a 8-over 150. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., shot one birdie and seven bogeys. Leslie Cloots, a freshman native of Antwerp, Belgium, recorded a 5-over 76 and a 6-over 77 for a combined 11-over 153. Cloots had two birdies, five bogeys, and one double bogey for a tie for 28th place. Senior Jackie Chang finished day two in a tie for 33rd place after scoring four bogeys and one double bogey, Chang, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., registered a 13-over 155 after a first round score of a 7-over 78 and a second round score of an 6-over 77.
Duke edged ahead of the field of 11 teams firing an 8-over 576, with Virginia trailing scoring a 22-over 590. North Carolina locked in third registering a 29-over 597. Miami and NC State are in fourth and fifth with a 31-over 599 and a 31-over 600, respectively. Florida State is in sixth with a 37-over 605, while Notre Dame is in seventh with a 41-over 609. Maryland and Clemson are tied for eighth each carding 43-over 611. Wake Forest lies in tenth with a 49-over 617, and Boston College lies in 11th with a 76-over 644.
Duke's Celine Boutier is the only under-par player in the field of 55 with a 2-under 140, and Matilda Castren, from Florida State, follows in second with 1-over 143. Two Virginia players are in a tie for third, Lauren Coughlin and Briana Mao, each scoring a 2-over 144. Duke players stand in fifth and sixth, Yu Liu with a 3-over 145 and Sandy Choi with a 4-over 146. North Carolina's Elizabeth Mallett and Katherine Perry, as well as Duke's Laetitia Beck and NC State's Brittany Marchand tie for seventh shooting a 5-over 147.
The ACC Women's Golf Championship continues through Saturday at the Sedgefield Country Club, which features a par 71, 6,107-yard layout. The tournament play resumes at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com and on Golfstat.com.
