May 21, 2014 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, GA. - The freshman season of standout Ronnie Schneider and the first-year singles year of Brayden Schnur both came to abrupt ends Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Tournament at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Both players lost tough three-set matches in 90 degree temperatures. Schnur, ranked 15th nationally, feel to veteran Pepperdine player Alex Sarkissian, in a three-hour plus three-set match. Sarkissian, ranked 28th nationally, defeated Schnur 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6) in as tight a match as the score would indicate.
The ITA National Rookie Player of the Year, Schnur's freshman year ends with a 19-5 record, including a 13-4 mark against nationally-ranked foes.
Fellow freshman Ronnie Schneider, ranked 33rd, of Bloomington, Ind., lost his first-round match to Lukas Ollert, #52 in the ITA rankings, of Auburn by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 ledger. Schneider finished 34-9 in singles in a phenomenal freshman year.
The season is not entirely over for the Tar Heels yet as Schnur and sophomore Brett Clark compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship Thursday in first round play. They will meet Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp of Mississippi State. The NCAA has set that match time for 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
