May 5, 2014 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL - Freshman Sydney Holman has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Freshman of the Year for 2014, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Holman, an attacker from Chapel Hill, shares the award with Maryland's Zoe Stukenberg.
Holman is the third Tar Heel to be named ACC Rookie of the Year, joining Betsy Gaines (2000) and Abbey Friend (2011).
She leads the Tar Heels with a UNC freshman-record 27 assists (tied for second-most in UNC history). The single-season program record for assists is 36 by Becky Lynch in 2011.
Holman's 61 points (34 goals, 27 assists) rank second on the team behind Friend and are tied as the third-best total by a freshman in Carolina history. Erin McGinnis set the UNC freshman scoring record in 1996 with 71 points (49 goals, 22 assists). Corey Donohoe also had 61 points in 2008 (50 goals, 11 assists).
Holman tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee on April 24 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals against Boston College and will miss the remainder of the 2014 season.
The Tar Heels will open NCAA Tournament play at home this weekend, hosting the winner of the Georgetown-Johns Hopkins game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
