Tar Heels Seek NCAA Regional Title in Oklahoma

•CAROLINA IN THE NCAA REGIONALS: The Tar Heels' participation in the 2014 NCAA Central Regional marks their 21st
appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Carolina has played in the NCAA East Regional 18 times since the regional format was instituted in
women's golf in 1993 – 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
Carolina participated in the NCAA West Regional in 2008 and 2012 and will play in the NCAA Central Regional for the first time this
year. In the Tar Heels' 20 previous Regional appearances, Carolina's top performance
came in 2011 when it was the runner-up at the NCAA East Regional played at LPGA
International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Carolina finished in fourth place in 1993 as Tar
Heel Kimberly Byham won the individual title by two strokes with a 213 total. Tar Heel
Meaghan Francella was the individual medalist at the 2004 NCAA East Regional with a
seven-under-par 209 total.
The Tar Heels advanced on to the NCAA Championships from the East Regional 10
times – in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. Carolina has
been to the NCAA Championship 14 times – 1982, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995,
1998, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012.
•THIS YEAR'S CENTRAL REGIONAL: This year's NCAA Central Regional
will be played at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., with the Oklahoma
State serving as host. Twenty-four teams and six individuals will compete in the
three-day, 54-hole East Regional, May 8-10, for the chance to move on to the NCAA
Championships to be played May 20-23 at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. The top
eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance to the NCAA
Championships from each of the three regionals -- the East Regional in Tallahassee, Fla.,
the Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla., and the West Regional in Ole Elum, Wash.
The teams competing in this year's NCAA Central Regional are as follows (listed
in order of seed): UCLA, Arkansas, Alabama, Arizona, LSU, Oklahoma State, Florida,
North Carolina, Ohio State, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, California, Kent State,
Kansas, Texas, UNLV, Colorado, SMU, Minnesota, Harvard, Lamar, Wichita State, LIU-Brooklyn and Siena. The individual participants
in the Central are Aurora Kan of Purdue, Sanna Nuutinen of TCU, Jenna Hague of Ball State, Ember Schulat of Illinois, Kimmie Hill of
Texas Tech and Stephanie Miller of Illinois.
•CAROLINA IN THE POLLS: Carolina is ranked 21st in the latest Golfstat's
Rankings and Golf World/WGCA Coaches' Poll and 20th in the Golfweek/Sagarin
Rankings.
•CAROLINA'S SPRING CAMPAIGN: Carolina has carded four top-10 finishes
this spring. The Tar Heels finished in third place at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club
Invitational and sophomore Elizabeth Mallett captured the individual title in the weathershortened
36-hole event. Carolina finished fourth at the ACC Championships, tied
for seventh place at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and placed 10th at the Northrop
Gruman Regional Challenge. In its other event, Carolina finished 12th at the Bryan
National Collegiate. Mallett carded two additional top-10 finishes as she finished seventh
at Darius Rucker and eighth at the Bryan National Collegiate.
•CAROLINA'S FALL CAMPAIGN: Carolina's top finish in the fall was a sixthplace
finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The Tar Heels placed 11th at the Dale
McNamara NCAA Fall Preview, tied for 11th at The Landfall Tradition and finished 16th
at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. Elizabeth Mallett posted the top individual finish
as she tied for 17th at the Dale McNamara NCAA Fall Preview.
