Best Games Of 2013-14: No. 20-No. 16
July 2, 2014 | Football
Continuing today and concluding on July 18, GoHeels.com will count down the top 25 games of the 2013-14 academic year.
No. 20: Carolina 5, Virginia 2 - Women's Tennis, March 8, 2014
Another typically brutal non-conference schedule for the Carolina women's tennis team saw the Tar Heels ranked No. 12 in the country entering a key ACC dual at No. 5 Virginia. Despite losing the doubles point to the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Carolina stormed back to win five of six singles matches to seal the victory. Perhaps the most impressive win of the day game at No. 2 singles, where freshman Hayley Carter hammered eventual NCAA individual champion Danielle Collins in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 19: Henderson's All-America Run At NCAAs - Wrestling, March 20-22, 2014
Despite being ranked in the top five nationally at 141 pounds for most of the year, a late-season stumble saw junior Evan Henderson seeded ninth at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. After a second-period pin in the round of 16, Henderson faced top-seeded and undefeated Mitchell Port of Edinboro. The New Florence, Pa., Tar Heel got late takedowns in each of the first two periods and held on for a 5-3 victory. Henderson's fourth-place finish was the highest for a Carolina wrestler in 18 years.
No. 18: Carolina 2, Connecticut 1 - Field Hockey, Oct. 26, 2013
Carolina established itself as a national title contender early in the 2013 field hockey season, and a comeback win over eventual champion Connecticut in Norfolk, Virginia, was perhaps the Tar Heels' best performance of the season. Trailing 1-0 nearly 10 minutes into the second half, Samantha Travers equalized for UNC on a penalty corner. Kristy Bernatchez then got the game-winner in the 60th minute on Emily Wold's second assist of the game to push UNC's record to 14-2.
No. 17: Carolina 17, Maryland 15 - Women's Lacrosse, April 5, 2014
In a matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2 and rematch of the 2013 national title game, the top-ranked Tar Heels bested Maryland 17-15 at Fetzer Field. Less than a week after suffering its first loss of 2014, Carolina rallied from a 10-9 halftime deficit to hand the Terps their first loss of the season. Senior Abbey Friend and freshman Maggie Bill had four goals each for the Tar Heels, whose 17 goals were the most for a UNC squad since 2007.
No. 16: Carolina 45, Virginia 14 - Football, Nov. 9, 2013
The first chapter of Ryan Switzer's legendary freshman season was writted against Virginia, as the Tar Heels pounded their oldest rival and extended their winning streak in the series to four games. With Carolina leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Switzer muffed a punt, picked it up and took it 85 yards for a touchdown. Marquise Williams, who had taken over as the starter at quarterback after Bryn Renner was lost for the season, threw for a touchdown, rushed for another and caught one from wide receiver Quinshad Davis.
