Missouri Trips Up Tar Heels 2-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Missouri played opportunistic women's soccer Friday night as it defeated North Carolina 2-1 in an exhibition match at Fetzer Field.
The Tigers finished a pair of nice chances after the Tar Heels turned the ball over in the defensive end of the field to secure the victory despite being outshot by UNC 14-5.
Missouri got on the board in the 36th minute when UNC turned the ball over in its 18-yard box and Rachel Hignett pounced the the unattended ball and finished into the left side netting from 14 yards out on the right side.
Carolina equalized in the 64th minute when Joanna Boyles lofted a ball over the Missouri back line and Alex Kimball ran on to it, dribbled for about 25 yards and then finished her breakaway chance from 10 yards out.
The tie did not hold up long as Missouri scored less than five minutes later. A back pass in the Tar Heel defensive third was picked off by Jessica Johnson who raced in on goal and sent a perfect through pass to Taylor Grant on the left side of the box. Grant finished the chance for a 2-1 lead and that goal held up through the final 22 minutes.
Missouri goalkeeper Kritsen Rivers, who played the second half, recorded four saves to keep Carolina off the scoreboard as the final minutes wound down.
UNC will open its regular season next Friday in Chapel Hill as part of the Carolina Nike Classic. Duke will meet Ohio State at 5 p.m. followed by a match between UNC and Stanford at 7 p.m. Fans can by tickets for the match at the GoHeels.com Ticket Center now.
