Offensive Explosion Sends UNC Over Gardner-Webb

Last season's top scorer for the Tar Heels, Tyler Engel, made it 1-0 just 3:26 into the match with a blast into the upper corner as he raced into the 18-yard box for the opening goal.
Sophomore Omar Holness' one touch off a fine passing display from Engel and Rob Lovejoy gave Carolina a 2-0 working margin at the 7:21 mark of the first stanza.
The attack continued in the Runnin' Bulldog third when Andy Craven struck for the next two goals and a 4-0 lead just 9:16 into the match. Craven deftly touched a left-footed shot into the lower-right corner. The initial shot in the sequence by Holness rang off the left post, but the ball squirted through the goal area to an oncoming Craven.
The fifth-year senior struck again on a play where Jonathan Campbell earned an assist. Craven settled a loose ball down and deposited into the net for a 4-0 Tar Heel advantage.
Senior Glen Long wasted no time scoring again for the Tar Heels early in the second half. C.J. Odenigwe created the scoring chance with a solid shot from the left flank that bounced to Long and he one touched the ball over the goal line for a 5-0 lead.
Freshman Alan Winn created scoring opportunities most of the evening and it finally paid off with a goal at the 55:16 mark of the match. Marco Sunol picked up an assist as he fed Winn and he unleashed a low shot that streaked past the Gardner-Webb keeper.
After play had settled down for a few minutes, Nyambi Jabang caught the Runnin' Bulldog keeper napping way off his line, and proceeded to chip the goalie from beyond midfield to make it 7-0 Tar Heels.
Carolina will host the Carolina Railhawks on Monday in its second exhibition match of the season at 7 p.m. The match will serve as a fundraiser for the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund. Admission is free, but donation information will be available to support the former Tar Heel captain.
