Balanced Attack Keys 3-0 Win Over Pitt
September 13, 2014 | Men's Soccer
Carolina (4-1, 1-0 ACC) broke through late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. Freshman Alan Winn hauled in a pass from Jabang, proceeded to flick the ball to himself, turned towards goal and showed good composure with an excellent finish for his first collegiate goal.
Nick Marshalll also earned an assist on the play, his second career helper for the Tar Heels.
Pitt (2-2, 0-1 ACC) nearly got the equalizer in the opening moments of the second half on a shot from midfielder Patrick Dixon, but the Tar Heels escaped when their defense forced the shot just wide.
Jabang scored a highlight reel goal in the 69th minute to give Carolina a little bit of breathing room down the stretch. Working a give-and-go sequence with Colton Storm, Jabang gathered the ball at the right side of the 18-yard box and sent a left-footed shot past the Pitt keeper to make it 2-0 Tar Heels.
Minutes later a poor clear by the Pitt defense set up another goal for Carolina as Jonathan Campbell was at the right place at the right time to give his side a commanding 3-0 lead over the Panthers.
The loose ball found him directly in front of the goal and he easily deposited his shot into the back of the net for his second career goal, his first since his freshman campaign back in 2012.
Head coach Carlos Somoano earned his 50th career victory, improving to 50-13-11 in four seasons with the Tar Heels.
Brendan Moore recorded his third-straight shutout with two saves. Carolina held a significant 18-6 shot advantage and a 10-2 margin in corner kicks.
North Carolina plays its next four matches on the road, beginning with Tuesday's NSCAATV Game of the Week at William & Mary. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., in Williamsburg, Va.
