CHAPEL HILL --- Three former University of North Carolina baseball standouts will begin postseason play this week as MLB division series action starts Thursday. Andrew Miller and the AL East champion Baltimore Orioles face Detroit beginning at 5:30 Thursday night in Baltimore. Chris Iannetta and Mike Morin of the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels welcome Kansas City to Anaheim at 9 p.m.
Miller has been one of the best relievers in all of baseball since joining the Orioles in a midseason trade from Boston. The 2006 National Player of the Year has a 2-0 record with a 1.35 ERA in 23 appearances in Baltimore. The lefty has struck out 34 batters against just four walks in 20.0 innings for the Orioles and had a 2.02 ERA in 73 regular season appearances.
Iannetta had his best season as an Angel in 2014, batting .252 with seven homers and 22 doubles in his third season with the club. His 22 doubles match a career high and his .373 on-base percentage is his best since 2008, his third season in Colorado.
Morin made his big league debut on April 30 and quickly established himself as one of Los Angeles' most reliable bullpen arms. A first-team All-America closer at UNC in 2012, Morin was 4-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 60 appearances for the Angels. He struck out 54 batters in 59.0 innings and walked just 19 in his rookie season.
