UNC Falls 2-1 At Duke
September 20, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (5-2-0, 1-1-0 ACC) had its four-match winning streak snapped when Duke scored twice in the second half to overcome a 1-0 lead the Tar Heels enjoyed at the half.
"Our guys got tired and had no legs at the end of the match. We had a mid-week game at William & Mary and they (Duke) didn't so that may have been a factor tonight," said UNC head coach Carlos Somoano.
"But credit Duke. They fought hard and came away with the result."
A superb first half by the Tar Heels was highlighted by a late goal from senior forward Tyler Engel in the 38th minute.
The third goal of the season for the Orland Park, Ill., native capped a dominating 15 minutes by Carolina that saw multiple players pressure the Blue Devils defense for a long stretch of the opening stanza.
Jonathan Campbell, Andy Craven, Omar Holness and Rob Lovejoy each had good looks at finding the back of the net, but it took a perfect cross by Alex Olofson to get the first goal of the match at the 37:37 mark.
Engel's one touch off the feed from Olofson came from just inside the 18-yard box, hit the right post and went over the line for the only goal of the first half as Carolina went into intermission with a 1-0 advantage over Duke.
Carolina was able to hold its lead up until the final 20 minutes of regulation. Sean Davis got the equalizer in the 75th minute off a free kick from 25 yards.
The tying marker snapped a UNC streak of 493 minutes, 44 seconds without allowing a goal that extended all the way back to the match against UCLA on Aug. 31.
Duke (3-2-1, 1-1-0 ACC) scored the game winner in the 81st minute when Davis sent a service that Cameron Moseley headed into the near post for his ACC-leading fifth goal of the year.
Carolina continues its road trip next Friday at No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., on ESPN3.
