Tar Heels Climb to Seventh in Final Round of Lady Paladin

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The North Carolina women's golf team concluded the Lady Paladin Invitational in seventh place with a 29-over-par 893. Carding a 4-over 220, freshman Bryana Nguyen was the leader for the Tar Heels.
Nguyen, a native of Columbia, Md., placed 12th after she fired three birdies and four bogeys for a 1-over 73 in the final round. Her three-day total included an even-par 72 in the first round and a 3-over 75 in the second round for an overall 4-over 220. Maia Schechter, of Takoma Park, Md., finished the tournament strongly with an even-par 72 in the last day of play registering two birdies and a double bogey. With a 4-over 76 on day one and a 2-over 74 on day two, senior Schechter tied for 17th with a 6-over 222. Two strokes behind, sophomore Leslie Cloots recorded 8-over 224, tying for 22nd. In addition to her first round score of an even-par 72 and second round score of a 3-over 75, Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, shot one birdie, four bogeys, and one double bogey for a 5-over-par 77 in the final round. Lexi Harkins, a freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill., carded three birdies, eight bogeys, and one double bogey for a 7-over 79. Harkins finished in 41st place with a 3-over 75, 2-over 74 in the first and second rounds, respectively, and had a 12-over 228 total score. Tied for 59th place, junior Elizabeth Mallett of Sutton Coldfield, England, stands with a 17-over 233. Mallett registered a 6-over 78 in the first round, 5-over 77 in the second round, and one birdie and seven bogeys for a 6-over 78 in the third round. Sophomore Rachel Jones, who played as an individual for the Tar Heels, finished in a tie for 50th place with a 14-over 230. Jones, or Asheboro, N.C., recorded two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey for a 5-over 77, in addition to her 9-over 81 on the first day and even-par 72 on the second day.
Furman was consistently ahead of the field of 18 teams, and finished with the only under-par score of the tournament with a 4-under 860. Wake Forest took second with an 18-over 882, and one stroke behind was Texas Tech with a 19-over 883. Florida State stands alone in fourth scoring a 25-over 889. Yale and Kansas tied for fifth with a 28-over 892, while North Carolina and Kennesaw State tied for seventh with a 29-over 893. Costal Carolina finished ninth with a 37-over 901, and East Carolina ended in tenth with a 46-over 910.
Head of the individual leaderboard was Furman's Taylor Totland, who recorded a tournament record with a three-day total of 4-under 209. Yale's Jennifer Peng registered a 2-under 214 for second place, and Wake Forest's Allison Emrey followed closely in third with a 1-under 215. In a three way tie for fourth at an even-par 216 are Wake Forest's Sierra Sims, Texas Tech's Gennai Goodwin, and Coastal Carolina's Lena Schaeffner. There was also a three-way tie for seventh at 1-over 217 between Furman's Alice Chen, Laura Demarco, and Valentina Romero. Kennesaw State's Ines Lescudier and Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn each finished in 10th with a 2-over 218, and North Carolina's Bryana Nguyen finished alone in 12th at a 4-over 220.
The Lady Paladin Invitational concluded Tuesday, Sep. 23, at the Furman University Golf Club, and the course featured a par 72, 6,266-yard layout. The Tar Heels will return to action on their home field at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 10-12. The tournament will be held at the UNC Finely Golf Course, which features a par 72, 6,295-yard layout.
