POSTGAME NOTES
NORTH CAROLINA 78, FLORIDA STATE 74
• Carolina is now 16-4 overall, 6-1 in the ACC and 8-2 at the Smith Center this year.
• The Tar Heels lead the series against Florida State, 47-12, including 37-11 since FSU joined the ACC. UNC is now 19-4 in Chapel Hill and 16-4 in the Smith Center versus the Seminoles.
• The Tar Heels committed a season-low five turnovers (previous low was six at Clemson). The five turnovers are the fewest by Carolina in Roy Williams' 415 games as the Tar Heels' head coach.
• The five turnovers are the fewest by UNC since it committed a school-record low two against Fairfield in the 1997 NCAA Tournament first round in Winston-Salem.
• J.P. Tokoto was one of four Tar Heels with a team-high three assists today (also Marcus Paige, Justin Jackson and Nate Britt). Tokoto did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes, which tied his season high for minutes played (also vs. Iowa). It is the third time this year Tokoto played 20 or more minutes without a turnover (also vs. UCLA and Louisville).
• Marcus Paige led the Tar Heels with 19 points and added three assists and two steal. It was Paige's third-highest scoring game of the season (23 at NC State, 21 vs. UCLA and 19 vs. FSU).
• Roy Williams has won 740 games. He is one win behind John Chaney who is 16th in NCAA history with 741 wins.
• Carolina shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half. That was the third straight half and fifth in seven halves that UNC shot 50 percent or better.
• Brice Johnson had his third double-double in the last five games (also vs. Louisville and Virginia Tech) with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Johnson went 7 for 9 from the floor. With UNC leading 58-52, Johnson scored Carolina's next seven points.
• Johnson is 24 for 36 from the floor in the last four games (.667).
• Carolina had two second-chance points in the first half but finished the game with 11. Leading 56-49 with nine minutes to play, UNC scored eight of its next 15 points on second-chance opportunities.
• Justin Jackson was 6 for 15 from the floor and 2 for 7 from the free throw line. The 15 field goal attempts were a season-high and the seven free throw attempts matched his season high (also vs. Ohio State). Jackson scored 14 points today, his third consecutive game in double figures (16 vs. Virginia Tech, 17 at Wake Forest and 14 today). This is the first time this season that Jackson has scored in double figures in three straight games.
• Nate Britt had four points and three assists, all in the first half, and played a total of 14 minutes despite having 15 stitches in his lip after a late-game collision Wednesday night at Wake Forest.
• Four Tar Heels played 30 or more minutes today – 35 by Paige, 34 by Tokoto and Jackson and 30 by Meeks.
• Carolina has out-scored Wake Forest and Florida State in the paint a combined 92-50 in the last two games. UNC out-scored the Deacons, 50-26, in the paint and out-scored FSU in the paint, 42-24.
• Florida State freshman guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored a game-high 35 points. He was 14 of 26 from the floor, 5 of 11 from 3FG and 2 of 5 from the free throw line.
He is the fourth player to score 35 or more against UNC in the Smith Center. It's the most points by an opponent in the Smith Center since Duke's J.J. Redick had 35 on Feb. 7, 2006.
• It was the 12th time in Smith Center history (431 collegiate games) that a college player scored 35 or more points. UNC players have done it seven times, Derrick Chievous of Missouri had 35 against Rhode Island in the 1988 NCAA Tournament and Bias, Simmons and Rathan-Mayes.
• The 35 points are the most ever by a Seminole against UNC. Toney Douglas scored 32 against Carolina on Jan. 28, 2009.
