Tar Heels Open With Success At Occoquan Chase

The North Carolina rowing team opened fall racing in dominant form Sunday, sweeping the top spots in both the varsity and novice eight races at the Occoquan Chase in Occoquan, Va. All four UNC varsity fours finished in the top six in that race.
“Overall it was an absolutely fantastic day,” Carolina coach Sarah Haney said following a day of racing on the Occoquan Reservoir. “The varsity eights dominated and came in one and two in the same event, so our second varsity eight beat every other varsity eight, so pretty impressive. Same thing for the novices – our second beat all of the other first novices eights as well.”
In the open women's 8+, UNC's varsity eight won in 17:38.43. Carolina's second varsity eight was second in 7:56.12.
In the college frosh/novice women's 8+, Tar Heel boats again took the top two spots, with the first boat crossing in 18:50.89 and the second in 20:52.56.
In the open women's 4+, Tar Heel boats took second (19:21.73), third (19:45.02), fourth (19:46.33) and sixth (20:47.60). A club racing team took first by less than a second and the only collegiate squad to edge a Tar Heel boat in the entire day was George Mason, which bested UNC's fourth varsity four by eight seconds.

“It was a beautiful day, absolutely gorgeous,” Haney said. “We're walking away feeling pretty excited about the way we started the season and looking forward to competing in Tennessee.”
The Tar Heels' other fall race is less than a month away, on Nov. 7 in Chattanooga, Tenn., where UNC will race in the Head of the Hooch regatta.
