October 13, 2015 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – After four weeks of intercollegiate play, the UNC softball team continues its fall training season with the annual Tar Heel Softball Series, a sequence of intersquad games, on Oct. 12-21, 2015. The Bombers were victorious on opening day, taking down the Unicorns, 5-2.
Pitching and defense dominated the first half of the game, as the score remained 0-0 through the first four innings. The Unicorns struck first in the top of the fifth, but the Bombers replied with two in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. The Unicorns tied the score at two in the top of the sixth, but late heroics by the Bombers plated three in the bottom of the sixth to take the series opener, 5-2.
Tracy Chandless proved she belonged on the “Bombers,” slugging a home run and a triple with two runs and three RBIs. Taylor Wike went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Bombers, while Kiana Sherlund, Lauren Fuller and Katelyn Shifflett each collected two hits.
Destiny DeBerry was the sole Unicorn to get multiple hits off sophomore Sydney Matzko, as the rookie went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Erin Satterfield and Jillian Ferraro both went 1-for-3 with a double, as Satterfield drove in the other Unicorn run and Ferraro and Leah Murray (1-for-2, BB) scored the two Unicorn runs.
Matzko went the distance in the circle for the Bombers, limiting her usual teammates to one earned run on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Kendra Lynch allowed five runs on 12 hits and two walks, striking out four, while picking up a pair of walks at the plate.
The Blue and White series continues Tuesday with game two of the best-of-three intersquad series.
