October 14, 2015 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – The UNC softball team continued the Tar Heel Softball Series on Tuesday with the second game of its intersquad Blue and White Series. After the Bombers won game one, 5-2, on Monday, a late flurry of runs by the Unicorns on Tuesday led them to a 5-4 victory in game two to even the series at one game apiece. The Tar Heels will get some rest over Fall Break and before returning to the diamond for the rubber match on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m.
The Unicorns started the scoring in the second inning, when Kendra Lynch hit a single to right field. Pinch runner Destiny DeBerry stole second, and Jillian Ferraro delivered the RBI with another single to right to plate the first run of the game.
The Bombers manufactured a run in the top of the third to even the score at one run apiece. Katelyn Shifflett got it started with a single to left. Berlynne Delamora laid down a sacrifice bunt, then Taylor Wike came through with an RBI double to the gap in right center to knot the score at one.
The score remained a 1-1 tie into the sixth inning, when the Unicorns reared their heads and went on a tear offensively to plate four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leah Murray kicked things off with a single to left. Kristen Brown laid down a great bunt for a single, then Lynch was intentionally walked to load the bases. Erin Satterfield then blasted a two-run double to deep right to break the tie. Ferraro picked up her second RBI of the night with a run-scoring single, and DeBerry made it 5-1 Unicorns with a bloop single to shallow left.
Down to their final three outs, the Bombers battled back, as Lauren Fuller got things started with a leadoff walk. Shifflett then stepped up to the plate and drilled a two-run home run over the fence in left center to cut the deficit in half, 5-3. Wike kept up the hot bat with her second double of the day, and Aquilla Mateen put runners on first and second after getting hit by a pitch. Freshman Kiana Sherlund made it a one-run game with a double to the gap, but the Unicorn defense then shut down the Bombers to escape the seventh with the lead intact and even the series with a 5-4 victory.
