Kenan Legends: Quincy Monk To Be Honored Saturday
October 15, 2015 | Football
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Former North Carolina linebacker Quincy Monk will be honored in the first quarter of the football game this weekend vs. Wake Forest as part of the new "Kenan Legends" series.
A native of Jacksonville, N.C., Monk played for the Tar Heels from 1998-2001. He was a senior on the 2001 squad that won the Peach Bowl over Auburn and finished 15th in the nation in total defense. That season, he had 125 tackles, eight pass breakups, forced a team-high three fumbles, recovered two fumbles and had two interceptions. Monk started the final 22 games of his career and was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants. He played three seasons in the NFL for the Giants and the Houston Texans.
Saturday's game vs. Wake Forest is Carolina's annual Cancer Awareness Game and, unfortunately, Monk has been affected by this terrible disease. Monk suffered a stroke in June, but after making an incredible recovery, he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of cancer. To help defray expenses in his battle with the disease, a gofundme.com/quincymonk page has been established.
“(Former teammate) Danny Davis called him a big teddy bear, but he was ferocious on the field," said Kory Bailey, a wide receiver who played at UNC with Monk. "He played with passion, played with heart, led by example. He would do whatever it took for us to win. He was always the one telling people to do things the right way, to be accountable. He was right up there with Ronald Curry and Alge Crumpler in doing things the right way. He is such a good guy and means so much to all of us.
“I hope everyone who knows him or is a Carolina fan will open their hearts and make a contribution to Quincy, his wife Lisa and their family. We've had great momentum but need to spread the word as far as we can.”
Quincy and his wife, Lisa, have two children Naomi(5) and Aiden(3).
