UNC COACH LARRY FEDORA
Opening Statement
“Great win for our team tonight, a great overall team effort. All three phases again and against an in-state opponent, so we're playing well right now they feel good about themselves as a team, the chemistry, the love that they have for each other. It's fun to coach this team.”
On the start
“We had a couple things happen there that didn't go our way, we had a ball batted at the line of scrimmage on the second pass that was intercepted. The first one, it was just a misread and some miscommunication. So we told them just don't panic, just play. We knew going into the game they were going to create some issues for us with as much blitzing as they did. So they were going to hit us on some things, we knew that and we had talked about that. Not getting frustrated, they may put us behind the chains a few times, but don't worry just play and we'll be okay and that's what the guys did.”
On Marquise Williams after the two interceptions
“He was good, he didn't want it to happen. But, I said, 'Don't get frustrated, it's fine, we'll be okay.' And he didn't, he did a good job of just staying pretty even-keeled all the way through the game which shows his maturity and where he's at as a quarterback and again, I'm pleased with the way he was playing.”
On the defense
“For all those defensive guys, because we had quite a few guys on defense that weren't out there today, I thought the guys that played in their spots did a heck of a job and I thought the rest of the guys around them did a great job rallying around them. Again it's, 'you got my back, I got your back.' All the guys, they just rally and they play well together.”
WAKE FOREST HEAD COACH DAVE CLAWSON
Opening statement:
“Tough day at the office. We played a good football team, and we didn't play well. I thought we came out good; we got the two turnovers, we converted it. You know, the bottom line is we just gave up too many explosive plays – the early post, and then they had the turnover and then the long bubble screen. Their kids did a great job making us miss in space, and that was the biggest concern going into the game: the amount of spatial players they have, two tailbacks, the slots and the receivers. Those were not good match ups for us, and they made us pay. They played really well, we didn't play really well. And that's why the result is the way it is. “
50 points this week compared to no points last week – how does that feel?
“Last week we tackled. We made plays in space. We got off the field on third downs. This week we didn't pressure the quarterback. We didn't make plays in space. We didn't tackle (Elijah) Hood. We didn't tackle (T.J.) Logan. We didn't tackle their quarterback. They broke us down in space and we missed many tackles. Last week on the game-winning play, our corner keeps contained and Hunter Williams makes a play at the 1-yard line. Today, our corner goes under and a bubble screen goes around him for 61 yards. We didn't play our defense and they made us miss. They made us look bad in the backend. Again, that's a credit to them. They are very skilled; they have a skilled quarterback, skilled tailbacks, and they've got really skilled receivers. That perimeter matchup – we were concerned about the matchup going into the game and for good reason. They have very good space players, and we did not tackle well on the second and third levels today. “
UNC PLAYER QUOTES
What do you think led to the rough start?
“Turnovers. Gotta protect the football. Just settle down and get out there and keep going. My mindset was get back, get ready, execute and move the ball down the field and put seven on the board.”
Difference in the second quarter
“We didn't start fast like we wanted to but we finally started to click. The offense knew they couldn't stop us, we were just stopping ourselves”
On the Mack Hollins long touchdown
“Mack one-on-one with a safety … well the rest is Mack”
“We set the bar when you come play in the Tar Pit. We are going to set it to our highest standards.”
DE Jalen Dalton
On his pregame jitters
“After getting through practice, it was all mental. As soon as kickoff came, it was on. After the first series I got off and realized it's just football and I was okay after that.”
On Wake's first touchdown
“It was miscommunication. We knew we had a good game plan and that we were going to be able to execute. We knew we were going to get back out there and make some plays happen.”
On personal hardships and success
“I've been working really hard the past two weeks, you know the bye week I really wanted to make an emphasis on just working hard, just getting better. During camp, I had a hamstring injury, and it kind of set me back a little bit, and each and every week I've just been trying to get better, trying to just keep getting better on routs, blocking, just being where the quarterback wants me to be at the right time.”
On tonight's win
“Tonight, I felt like we were on the same page on every aspect of the game, from defense, special teams, offense, quarterbacks, receivers, running backs. I just felt like we all put it together. It's fun when we have a team like we do, the locker room we do, we all work together, we have fun, and like Coach Fedora says, it's fun just being around all of the guys. It's like a big family now, and we all use each other…I feel like we have it best right now, with the relationships we have, the bonds we have, as a unit, as a team. That's big.”
WR Mack Hollins
On Wake Forest's defense
“There was nothing different than any team we played, just the opportunity to be open and to see it. Obviously, our receivers had been open before. Some days we always get hit when it's open and some days you don't.”
