GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina softball team traveled to Greensboro on Wednesday to take on UNCG in an in-state matchup as part of the fall exhibition season. Carolina collected a total of 11 hits in the game, while solid defense and aggressive baserunning helped the Tar Heels defeat the Spartans, 6-2.
“I was pleased with our offensive output and quality at-bats,” said head coach Donna J. Papa. “Our hitters put us in a position to score the majority of innings. Our pitchers did a great job of keeping their hitters off balance as well as executing our game plan. I thought we were solid in all phases of the game. We look forward to challenging our players and getting better each day.
Senior Tracy Chandless led the Tar Heels at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI”s. Infielder Taylor Wike also sent two runs across the plate with a walk and a double, while Aquilla Mateen got the scoring started in the top of the first and both singled and walked.
Dani Garcielita reached base all three times, registering a single and two walks, and Kristen Brown singled up the middle for a key RBI.
Underclassmen Katelyn Shifflett and Destiny De Berry displayed excellent running, executing a key heads up play which resulted in De Berry crossing the plate.
Kendra Lynch got the start in the circle for the Tar Heels, tossing three hitless innings with three strikeouts and just two walks issued in the third. Lauren Fuller allowed a home run in the fourth inning, then Sydney Matzko hurled six strikeouts with four hits over the final three frames.
Garcielita and Erin Satterfield made a pair of plays fit for the highlight reel, while Brown, Wike and Darby Rosen all showcased strong defense in the field as well.
The Tar Heels return to the diamond for a pair of home games next weekend to close out the fall season, beginning with hosting Elon on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
